The prestigious award is presented by the IOC every two years to ONE sporting event hosted

The world is taking notice of our community’s sustainability efforts! Recently the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Award for Sport and the Environment was given to the Organizing Committee for Eugene 08, the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials competition held in Eugene this past summer.

The recent awards ceremony was held in Vancouver, Canada on March 30th during the IOC’s 8th Conference on Sport and the Environment. Vin Lananna, Eugene 08 Co-Chair and U of O Associate Athletic Director and Director of Track & Field, along with Barbara Kousky, one of the Eugene 08 Project Managers, were present to accept the award on behalf of the Oregon Track Club.

Sanipac was proud to partner with Eugene 08 in providing the trash and recycling services for this massive effort. All told nearly 71% of materials generated, (or approx. 66.4 tons), were recycled or composted during the event, which also included:

• composting of food waste and eating utensils
• reduced use of paper and other disposable materials
• sustainable travel modes – buses, shuttles, bike and skateboard valet parking
• close to 100% use of clean wind power purchased from EWEB
• maximum use of local and organic food sources

Previously the Eugene 08 event has received the Lane County Special Event “Trashbuster” Award as well as the Governor’s “Oregon Sustainability Special Project Award.”

This summer Eugene will be host to another major track and field event with the 2009 U.S. National Championships for Track & Field being held June 25-28 at Hayward Field.

Thanks to everyone for helping to make Eugene 08 truly one of the most environmentally friendly sporting events in the world!
